Why is Double Opt-in considered better than Single Opt-in?

  • What's the difference between the two?

  • Hello,

People, especially Email Marketers have been frequently debating upon 'Double Opt-in vs Single opt-in'

Let me explain the fundamental difference between the two:
    1. Single opt-in: It is a subscription process where a new email address is added to your mailing list without requiring the owner of that email address to confirm definitively that they knowingly and willingly opted in.
Eg: If Clearout had been following Single opt-in (though we follow Double Opt-in), we would have asked for a sign up with your email Id and activated your account. That's it. Process finished.

    2. Double Opt-in - It occurs when a user firstly signs up, and then an email is sent out to the user which includes a link to click and confirm the subscription. So in short, Double opt-in has a confirmation step included too.
For eg: whenever a user signs up to a clearout account, a confirmation email is sent out from Clearout to the Email ID used for the subscription process. Once the user clicks on the link provided, the account is activated.

It's all a matter of perspective but we consider Double Opt-in better keeping in mind the following -

    1. Assures lower bounce rate
    2. High-quality leads
    3. No spam folder surprises
    4. Create spam free data
